9th Annual Convention
International President

Barry J. Palmer, of Berowra, NSW, Australia, was elected president of Lions Clubs International at the association’s 96th International Convention, held in Hamburg, Germany, July 5-9, 2013.

President Palmer was a real estate company director.

A member of the Hornsby Lions Club since 1976, President Palmer has held many offices within the association, including club president, zone chairperson, cabinet secretary, cabinet treasurer and district governor. He has served on numerous committees and as the Host Committee Chairperson for the 2010 Lions Clubs International Convention in Sydney, Australia.

In recognition of his service to the association, President Palmer has received many awards, including the 100% Club President Award, the 100% District Governor Award, six International President’s Medals and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honor the association bestows upon its members. He is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.

In addition to his Lion activities, President Palmer is a recipient of the Australian Medal issued by the Australian Government, the Australian Childhood Cancer Research Award and the Spastic Centre of NSW Award. He was a Pioneer Volunteer at the Sydney Olympics and a member of the New South Wales Paralympic Committee.

President Palmer and his wife Anne, also a Lion and a Melvin Jones Fellow, have three children and eight grandchildren.

Governor

Lion Chamindu Abeywickrama MJF JP,

A dynamic young student of President’s College, Rajagiriya, was seen growing and showing his ability to lead by being a Senior Prefect, Games Captain and the captain of the Cricket and the Volleyball teams.

From his early days leadership was never a challenge to him but a passion to him.

He served in executive and managerial positions after beginning his career in the private banking sector and he was conferred a Diploma from the Institute of Bankers Sri Lanka.

Early exposure into the business world and the experience gained, elevated him to be the Managing Director of Sanvick Homes, properieter of Chamara Pharma and Swap test distributor.

Changed his civil status by marring Kishani who subsequently became a Lion to support Lion Chamidu’s journey in lionism. Kivin is their beloved son who is a brilliant student of Horizon International College, Malabe.

A person with such high repute will not go unnoticed by the Lions for certain. The new millennium 2000 was a turning point in his life, where he was invited to join the world’s most active and the largest service organization as a Charter Member of Lions club of Koswatta.

In 2004-2005 he brought recognition to the club by been adjudged the best club in the region when he was steering the club as its President.

Nearly a decade later he steers the district as District Governor.

In his long travel in lionism he passed the following mile stones.

1st Vice Governor

Lion Kusum Sandanayake MJF JP,

Club Level.

Kusum Sandanayaka entered Lionism through Lions Club of Gothatuwa New Town in 1999. He served as the Club Secretary in 2002-2003 and as Club President in 2006-2007. He also received the award for Most Outstanding Club Secretary, that year.

District Level.

Lion Kusum has held Cabinet positions under nine District Governors, which includes the post of Cabinet Treasurer in 2010-2011. He has received many appreciation awards for his outstanding performance by the respective District Governors. Lion Kusum received the many awards District level and Multiple level.

Few significant awards are:

  • The Lion of the Year (Most Helpful) 2008-2009 at the 4th Annual Lion District Convention.
  • The Lion of the Year Award 2009-2010 at the 5th Annual Lions District Convention.

International Level.

  • Holder of Guiding Lion Certificate.
  • Attended the emerging Lions Leadership Institute for Lions from India, South Asia, Africa, and the middle east ( Nairobi Kenya February - 2005).

  • Attended Lions International Conventions (USA Bostan, USA Illinois, Korea Busan, Hongkong and Thailand).

Professional Career.

Lion Kusum was educated at Sripali College, Horana and Gothatuwa Maha Vidyalaya, Gothatuwa. And he entered the National Apprentice Board as a Special Apprentice in Colombo Dockyard Ltd,of Sri Lanka, Year 1978. Lion KusumSandanayaka is a Diploma Holder (VITB Singapore) Marine Engineering and is currently the Founder/Chairman and Managing Director of Dhanushka Engineering Company (Pvt)Ltd, one of the leading steel fabricators in Sri Lanka, since 1985 and specialized in fabricating steel fuel storage tanks and bowsers for the petroleum industry in Sri Lanka.

He is the Chairman of LIOC Bowser Owners Association in the year 2013-2014, Vice President of All Island Petroleum Dealer Association 2008-2013, and President of Industrial Owners Association 2008-2010 (Kolonnawa Industrial Zone) and All island Justice of Peace from year 2000.

Personal Career.

Lion Kusum is married to Lion Chandani since 1984. They have two children and they are too also members of Leo Club of Kolonnawa, elder Son Leo Dhanushka Sandanayaka, (Leo District President 2009-2010 / Leo of the Year 2010/2011), Daughter Leo Chanika Sandanayaka. (Leo District Secretary 2012-2013)

Lion Chandra Perera MJF JP,

Education.

  • He studied in Nalanda Collage and qualified at the Institute of Engineering , Katubedda in Civil engineering followed by Structural and Sanitary Engineering
  • During school life:
    • Was the captain in senior Debating team continuously fo4 Years.
    • Was leading science Union, welfare Union and was the first student secretary in Sarvodaya Campaign

Occupation.

  • Started as a Engineering Assistance In Public Health Engineering Department in 1970.
  • After three years Joined Buildings Dept.
  • After completing 30 Years Service joined Urban Devolvement Authority as Deputy Director Engineering Services
  • At present He is Serving as a Engineering Consultant and is engaged as the General Manager at MACRO Solutions Engineering PVT Ltd.
