NCD CENTER

Breathing Life into Tomorrow, Supporting the Non-Communicable Disease Centre.

In order to tackle the lack of a systematic noncommunicable illness (NCD) screening services at the lowest level of basic healthcare institutions, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health launched Healthy Lifestyle Centres (HLCs) in 2011. By early risk factor identification and simplifying access to specialised care for those who are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease, or CVD, the HLCs’ services aim to reduce the risk of NCDs in people aged 40 to 65.

Therefore, with the guidance of the past district governor and the present governor Lion Panthaka Dabare, of  Sri Lanka Lions District 306 C1 proudly introduced the idea of building a NCD Screening Service Center in Kaduwela, Sri Lanka.

The World Heath Organization/International Society of Cardiology risk-prediction chart is used to assess the 10-year CVD risk of the screened clients at HLCs using the total-risk method. Those who have a ten- Cardiovascular probability of over 30% are referred to specialised medical clinics based on their levels of Cardiovascular hazard and intermediary risk factors, while those with lesser risks are treated using lifestyle adjustments and invited to reappear at the HLC for screening.

The major noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which include diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease (CVD), are the dominant health problem of the twenty-first century and were responsible for an estimated 63% of all fatalities worldwide in 2014. More than 75% of these fatalities take place in developing and middle-income nations.

Importance of having NCD screening center

Establishing a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) testing center is crucial for a number of reasons, including:

1.Early detection: Regular tests allow for early discovery, prompt action, and better treatment results. People have access to the essential examinations and testing to detect suspected NCDs at an early stage thanks to a dedicated screening centre.

2.The option to evaluate a person’s risk factors and general health state is offered through NCD screening centers. Healthcare providers can identify patients who are more likely to develop NCDs by assessing variables like cholesterol levels, blood pressure, height and weight (BMI), and familial risk factors.

3.Health Information and Raising Awareness: NCD screening facilities are essential for encouraging health education and bringing various NCDs to the public’s attention. To help people comprehend the dangers of NCDs and the value of living a healthy lifestyle, they can offer classes, workshops, and counselling sessions.
